In 1961, at the height of the space race between the U.S. and the USSR, a secret closed city was built to the north from Moscow to train Russian cosmonauts. It was here that the famous Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, was trained!
Many other famous Russian cosmonauts were trained here together with Gagarin: German Titov, Valentina Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut, and Alexei Leonov. The best facilities were built for them: the world's largest centrifuge and hydro laboratory.
